Plan Australia media officer Karen Forman and major gifts officer James Wallace Smith accompanied one of Plan's most generous supporters, Mrs Margaret Flower and her friend Jean, both from Adelaide, to East Timor in May. The purpose of the trip was to check out the newly-opened pre-school in Fatuk-hun Village, 27km outside of the capital Dili, which Mrs Flower funded. Together with Plan photographer Tom Balks, the editor of Girlfriend magazine, Sandra Barker and a journalist from Australian Associated Press, Sharon Labi, the team spent a day at the school, meeting children and teachers and being formally thanked by the village Elders. Mrs Flower was very happy with the concrete, timber and bamboo building, which boasts two classrooms, and has donated extra funds to cover the cost of teacher training. Meanwhile, work is ongoing on an adjacent primary school, being built with funds channelled through Plan's international office. When complete, the primary school will house more than 200 children. It will feature a fresh water supply (currently villagers have to trek down a step mountainside to collect water from a small stream) and the children will receive four healthy meals each week. With East Timor now independent and needing our help more than ever, Plan Australia will soon announce details of further educational projects in Australia’s nearest neighbour.
